ASCENSION: Rules

Use Ctrl+F to find keywords relating to your issue.

Please be aware that the rules are subject to change at any time. It is highly advised you keep yourself up to date with this thread.

Keywords and Abbreviations

RP - Roleplaying; this is when you take on a character and perform their role, emotions, and actions.

IC - In-Character; in roleplaying, you are bound to your character and must have their feelings and act in a way that suits their ideas and thinking.

OOC - Out-Of-Character; the exact opposite of in-character, you are not acting as your character anymore. This can be used to express anything wrong, against the rules, or correct issues in your own roleplay.

PK - Permanent Kill; a character has died and will not be brought back in unless something is worked out OOCly.

AFK - Away From Keyboard; this player has taken a break from the game and is not currently playing.

S2K - Shoot-To-Kill; this is the default mode of engagement on the server, in which you are free to fire on enemies and kill them.

S2M - Shoot-To-Miss; this is more of a secondary engagement method, which must be agreed on by both sides before being put in place. When the engagement is set to S2M, you must purposely aim off the enemy.

Minge - Someone who is dedicated to ruining others’ RP experience. Minging is the act of being a minge and ruining RP for others.

P2L - Play-To-Lose; this describes roleplaying your actions and reacting to other player’s actions in a realistic and respectful manner.

Metagaming - The act of taking and/or using OOC information for your IC benefit. Metabaiting is the act of encouraging metagaming, whether it be directly giving them information, or more in-direct ways such as hinting at IC actions through OOC.

RDM - Random Deathmatch; this term speaks for itself, where someone is killing players without reason. In a serious roleplay format, there are multiple ways you can obtain reason to kill others. This doesn’t apply against other factions, however, unless a different method of engagement has been declared from all parties.

Rules of the Server

0. Practice common sense while consulting these rules. The general idea counts, not the exact wording. The rules are guidelines for roleplay and should be interpreted to best resolve the situation at hand, not manipulated to suit your needs. This means that administrators have the final decision on whether you broke a rule or not, although if you wish to dispute their ruling please include an SA+ into the forum conversation. The SD will involve themself when it is appropriate.

1. All standard roleplay rules apply, these prohibit behaviors such as:
  • Metagaming (using OOC information in an attempt to gain an IC advantage.)
  • Metabaiting (intentionally giving other people OOC information to incite destructive metagaming)
  • Powergaming (forcing actions upon others)
  • Invalid character descriptions and name (creating unserious or invalid character descriptions and names)
  • Misuse of props (blocking, surfing, killing players etc.)

2. Mingegrabbing (taking items without roleplay) is not allowed.
  • When you find an item in the world, type a /me showing that you want to pick it up.
  • If another player is competing for the same item, resolve the conflict before picking the item up.
  • This also applies when searching and removing items from a character or container.
  • You can't sprint while carrying someone who is critically wounded.

3. You may not attack or kill friendly/neutral characters randomly.
  • Your reason and documentation must be solid if an administrator questions your actions.
  • Personal in-character reasons are valid. These include but are not limited to:
  • Revenge, for yourself or a friend.
  • Killing someone to void their immediate knowledge of a situation.
  • Administration has final word on whether a killing was valid or not, and if it is PK-worthy.

4. If your character happens to be killed and is not permanently killed (PKed), ‘New Life Rule’ applies. Under NLR:
  • You forget everything that happened during the event in which you were killed.
  • You are not allowed to return to the area in which you died or interact with any people involved for at least 10 minutes.
  • You cannot remember who killed you.
  • It is assumed that you remember losing your weapons by yourself, i.e. you cannot see one of your items in another person's hands and assume they were the one to NLR you.

5. Your character will be Permanently Killed (PK'd) if you are:
  • Attempting to take on a significantly more powerful/numerous force by yourself and dying. (Rambo)
  • Committing suicide (worming your way out of a situation with joke /mes is also seen as suicide).
  • Not fear roleplaying to the highest level possible.

6. Additional, specific PK criteria are as follows.
  • Rule 3 always applies! You must have solid reasoning for PK'ing a character. Staff have final say on the validity of a reason.
  • You may not PK someone with a throwaway character. An SA or above will determine if your character is developed.
  • If you are killed while attempting to PK someone's character, you will be PK'd.
  • This also applies to people assisting you in trying to PK a character.
  • This is known as a counter-PK and is valid.
  • If possible, you should request a staff member to watch over any PK attempts. This is to ensure that both sides follow all rules and to provide a neutral witness in the case of a PK appeal.

7. You may wear a faction’s uniform, for infiltration purposes or otherwise, but it must be RP'd and you will be PK'd if killed for wearing it.

8. Base attack rules are as follows:-
  • There must be at least ten characters from the defending faction online at the time.
  • This player will be notified that the base is being attacked.
  • They will have the opportunity to defend their base, but they can choose not to.
  • Attackers will always be PK'd if the death is valid, even for friendly fire incidents and fall damage. This rule may not apply in certain events and is ultimately applicable at senior staff’s discretion.
  • Defenders will not be PK'd unless normal PK criteria applies.
  • You may not "base camp".
  • When initiating an attack, you may not sit outside any entrance or exit from the defender's base for longer than five minutes. Remaining in cover to avoid being shot does not count as base camping.

9. You may not confiscate money and items from another player purely for personal greed.
  • You must properly roleplay all of your actions as normal.
  • You may only take a maximum of $500 of their requisition/cash and up to three script items. COMM-LINKS (used for squad channels) cannot be confiscated or given to the other faction under any circumstances.

10. You may only scam another player IC’ly. This means that scamming needs to be a result of roleplay, and that you are not allowed to try and trick someone OOC’ly (telling them to trade or buy from you, then keep the items after they pay, without any roleplay).

11. Abuse of whitelists in any way is strictly forbidden and will leave you permanently banned from the faction (and possibly others) in the future. This includes:
  • abusing vendors to gain an advantage or game the item system
  • abusing a position of IC power to OOCly harass other players
  • creating additional characters on a whitelist without authorization
  • playing in a way that would not fit with the faction's ideals (without authorization)

12. Abuse of your premium perks will result in those perks being taken away from you.

13. No form of spamming is acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to:-
  • Prop spam
  • Using full capitals in OOC excessively
  • Posting logs in OOC
  • Using chat systems in a way they were not intended, such as using IC instead of LOOC

14. Impersonation of any community member, player or staff is strictly forbidden. This also includes impersonation as a part of social engineering (e.g. posing as a Valve employee etc.).

15. You may not use third party software to modify/affect the state of your game e.g. hacks or LUA scripts.
  • External crosshairs are exempt from this rule.

16. Always attempt to spell and use grammar correctly. Any major issues in your sentence must be corrected with a LOOC message. You must also speak English while talking in (L)OOC channels, though speaking another language IC is fine (as long as your character knows that language through language flags).

17. Respect your fellow players. This includes:
  • Being offensive, abusing game features for fun, trolling or flaming by intention in OOC for own entertainment is not allowed in any way.
  • Player harassment is not tolerated, no matter who the victim is.
  • Racism may be roleplayed with taste and respect on an IC level - however, if a player asks you to stop you must do so immediately. Racist language/symbols are not allowed in OOC chat.

18. Disrespecting the staff team is not allowed. On the server, staff decisions are final. If you have a complaint or concern, bring it to the appropriate forum board.

19. You are bound to your character and when engaged in roleplay must act accordingly.
  • stalling roleplay is not allowed
  • switching characters to avoid RP is not allowed
  • disconnecting from the server to avoid RP is not allowed
  • Roleplay is always in effect and your actions are assumed to be your character's actions
  • Being away-from-keyboard (AFK) is not an excuse to avoid a roleplay situation - you can still be searched/detained/affected by players who are properly roleplaying those actions.
  • If you are roleplaying something that requires an action on the part of the other player, i.e. trying to knock them out or moving them around, you must contact an administrator.

20. Your character’s physical description describes your physical appearance only; inappropriate physical descriptions must be changed. Physical descriptions often contain the following traits:
  • Skin color
  • Eye color
  • Hair length and color
  • Apparent age (not an exact number, for example "In his Mid-50s")
  • Apparent height (again, a rough visible estimate, such as "Standing at around 6 feet tall")
  • Worn clothing

21. Your character’s physical properties can never be changed unless approved by a Senior Administrator. You may never change your physical description to deceive people OOCly; i.e. changing the wording of your physical description to make people overlook you.

22. You may only add something significant (e.g a gas mask or face covering) to your character's description if they have acquired said item ICly; minor things such as jewelery, unimportant clothing, and so on are exempt from this and may be added freely.

23. Give your character a proper name, either first/last or in "nickname" format. A normal name would be John Doe, and a nickname would be 'Big John'. If you want to roleplay a celebrity or famous figure, ask a Server Director for authorisation.

24. Do not engage in intensive roleplay if you do not have enough time to roleplay its consequences.

25. Rules related to shoot-to-kill (S2K):
  • Combat is always assumed to be S2K; if you wish to S2RP, S2M, or S2I, you must request it via /itL and the other party must agree.
  • You need to type a well-developed /mel or /me (no /mec) before attacking someone.
  • Firefights or melee fights cannot be initiated by a bind of any form, and must be typed out.
  • If your weapon is in your inventory, you need to type multiple /me’s and respect your target's reactions.
  • One /me to equip a weapon from your inventory.
  • One /me to select a weapon so you are holding it.
  • One /me to raise and fire a weapon that you have recently equipped.
  • You do not need to roleplay most actions, such as switching weapons or moving around.
  • You must roleplay equipping weapons from your inventory, except for grenades.
  • You must roleplay throwing grenades.
  • You must roleplay loading more ammunition from your inventory.
  • During a shoot-to-kill firefight, you MUST explicitly roleplay injuries or pain. After the firefight is finished, it is expected that you correctly roleplay any injuries you may have suffered and assume the correct treatment.
  • You must abide by your injury status (SLIGHTLY INJURED, MAJORLY INJURED, CRITICALLY INJURED, INCAPACITATED/NEAR DEATH). If no effort is made to abide by your injury status, your character may be PK’d.
  • You cannot heal yourself fully & properly until you RTB (return to base), this includes fixing your armor. You will be put under PK risk if you heal yourself mid-combat.
  • All healing must be roleplayed, and though your /me does not have to be extremely long, it has to have some substance to it.
  • For example: "/me grabs some gauze, wrapping it around his arm” is acceptable, "/me bandage" is not acceptable.
  • Melee weapons may not be used for initiating S2K and can only be used for S2K if one has already started.
  • S2K will be considered over if two minutes pass without gunfire being exchanged.

25. Contact between your own characters in any shape or form is forbidden. This includes:
  • Item transfer.
  • Money transfer.
  • Having characters that are related, unless you have authorization from an SA+.
  • Breaching your own containers on a different character.

26. Characters under the age of 18 are not permitted under any circumstance.

27. Erotic roleplay is strictly prohibited.
  • Relationship roleplay is allowed to an extent; any sexual activities between characters are to be done in F2B (fade to black).

28. Voiding a situation requires the approval of a Senior Administrator or approval of all parties included. When it comes to voiding situations where you are the only party, you require approval from a Senior Administrator or higher.

29. Counter-breaking rules or acting vigilante on the server is not allowed. If you need to deal with someone, post a ban request in the correct section on the forums or contact a staff member ingame.

30. Rules regarding the breaching of containers:
  • Abandoned/event containers can be broken into with authorisation from an Senior Administrator, sufficient roleplay and an appropriate means to do so. If you’re unsure as to whether a container is abandoned, ask a staff member.
  • Containers owned by someone (e.g a hidden box put by a player) can only be broken into while the owner is online on the character which owns the container ICly. Senior Administrator authorisation is still required.
  • Breaching containers without roleplay and stealing from containers without authorisation is not allowed.
  • See Rule 7 for additional clarification on container breaching.

31. The roll command is primarily used for gambling or other IC decisions, like flipping a coin. You may only use it for combat if both parties agree, or an SA+ decides that rolling would be appropriate for a given scenario.

32. If you are in a situation where you could potentially die and receive NLR, you may not unequip weapons so you don't drop them. Doing so will result in confiscation of your items and possibly a ban. After such a situation is over you may not unequip your weapons for another five minutes unless you return to a safe area.

33. MUTINIES:
  • A mutiny/coup d’etat may be attempted on a faction’s leadership/commissioned officers with SD approval.
  • A valid reason for a mutiny must be presented to an SD, as well as the goal of the mutiny.
  • At least fifteen members of the faction are required to instigate a mutiny.
  • A plan of the mutiny must be discussed with the SD(s) and a thorough detail is expected in order to help with staff oversight.
  • The aftermath of a mutiny’s success/failure will be highly ambiguous and will be left to be discussed after the mutiny has been carried out.
  • All of a mutiny’s participants are subjected to a PK risk at SD discretion if captured/killed, depending on their level of involvement.
